Electronic signature

An electronic signature (also called digital signature) is the equivalent of a handwritten signature. The eIDAS regulation of the European Union distinguishes three quality levels of electronic signatures.

An electronic signature (also called digital signature) is the equivalent of a handwritten signature. The digital signature of a document ensures two basic properties: Authenticity and integrity. Authenticity means that documents can be uniquely assigned to authors. Integrity refers to the authenticity of the document’s content.

The European Union’s eIDAS Regulation distinguishes between three quality levels of electronic signatures:

simple electronic signature advanced electronic signature qualified electronic signature

A qualified electronic signature has the same legal effect as a handwritten signature.
