Before you switch

How to choose a contract software alternative.

Most teams start looking for an alternative because of price, a missing feature or a tool nobody wants to use. Before you compare products, answer the questions below. They rule out more options than any feature table.

Decide which category you need.

E-signature tools get a document signed and stop there. Contract management (CLM) platforms also cover what happens after the signature: storing contracts, tracking renewal dates and notice periods, and reporting on obligations. If your problems start after signing, another e-signature tool will not solve them. If you only need signatures, a full CLM platform is more than you need.

Check which signature level your documents need.

Under eIDAS, a simple electronic signature (SES) covers most commercial contracts in the EU. Some documents need an advanced (AES) or qualified (QES) signature, which requires identity verification. Not every tool offers all three levels, so this question alone can shorten your list.

Compare pricing models, not list prices.

Tools charge per seat, per document or envelope, or in bundles, and contract management is sometimes a separate licence on top of signing. Two tools with the same starting price can cost very different amounts at your real volume, so run the numbers with your own seat count and document volume.

Plan the migration before you cancel.

Export your signed documents and their audit trails first, and time the switch around your current contract’s notice period. Each alternatives guide includes the steps for moving away from that specific tool.

Know when staying is the better answer.

Switching takes time. If your current tool covers what you need and the real problem is setup or adoption, fixing that is usually cheaper than moving. Each guide ends its buyer section with the situations where your current tool is still the right choice.

Frequently asked questions.

  • E-signature software collects legally valid signatures on a document. Contract management software covers the whole contract lifecycle: drafting from templates, approvals, signing, a searchable repository, renewal reminders and reporting. Many CLM platforms include e-signatures, but e-signature tools rarely include contract management.

  • Every price and feature claim is taken from the vendor's own pages and listed with its source and the date it was last checked, at the foot of each guide. Pricing changes often, so confirm the current figure with the vendor before you buy.

  • Most of the work is exporting signed documents with their audit trails, rebuilding templates and carrying over renewal dates. The effort depends mostly on how many contracts you hold and how many templates you use. Each alternatives guide lists the steps for the tool you are leaving.
