What is a Secure Signature Creation Device (SSCD)?

The term Secure Signature Creation Device (SSCD) means, according to EU Regulation No. 910/2014 Art.3 para.22, a configured software or hardware used to generate an electronic signature. The SSSEE ensures the secrecy and uniqueness of a signature key and the files to be signed may not be modified. The Secure Signature Creation Device can be used to create Qualified Electronic Signatures that are equivalent to a manual signature.

A Secure Signature Creation Device must meet the following criteria:

  • Signature keys must be unique.
  • Their secrecy must be sufficiently guaranteed.
  • They must not be derivable with sufficient certainty and they must be protected against forgery when used.
  • Signature keys must be reliably protected by the legitimate signer from use by others.
  • SSCDs do not alter the data to be signed, nor do they prevent this data from being displayed to the signer prior to the signing process.
